In what was supposed to be a National Day of Mourning for her Majesty the Queen, however, an estimated 9.8 million Australians have been involved in a cybersecurity breach.
The Optus Data Breach was notified to the public yesterday, Thursday 22 September 2022 at 2:00 PM, where Optus made an official announcement of an investigation into the possible unauthorised access of current and previous Optus customers information.

Although it is unclear where the attack originated from, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Scamwatch has advised all Optus customers to change their password now, to avoid any identity theft. “If you are an Optus customer, your name, date of birth, phone number, and email addresses may have been released. For some customers identity document numbers such as driver’s licence or passport numbers could be in the hands of criminals,” Scamwatch said in a statement.
Optus continues to investigate, however, there is a lot of uncertainty about what this means, for not only individuals but also businesses. “We are devastated to discover that we have been subject to a cyberattack that has resulted in the disclosure of our customer’s personal information to someone who shouldn’t see it,” said Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, Optus CEO.
Optus reiterates that services remain safe to use and are operating as normal. “While we are not aware of customers having suffered any harm, we encourage customers to have heightened awareness across their accounts, including looking out for unusual or fraudulent activity and any notifications which seem odd or suspicious. Current services, such as mobile and home internet are not affected, and the messages and voice calls of customers have not been compromised.”, Optus said in their official media release statement.
With the Optus Data Breach, it does flag for all of us to be diligent with our security and Cybersecurity Awareness.
